The ECM Test and Development Engineer will be responsible for proper documentation, testing, validation, and troubleshooting of the Engine Control Module (ECM) software.  This engineer will also be responsible for the creation of requirements with the ECM team and documentation of the requirements according to company standards.  The successful engineer must have a strong background in engine controls, be highly motivated, hands-on, a good problem solver, and willing to travel up to 6 weeks a year for testing.


  • Work with the ECM Team to understand ECM requirements and work with Karma’s Software Quality Team to properly document ECM requirements within Karma’s internal tracking systems (Polarion and JIRA)
  • Create and execute ECM test cases within Karma’s internal system (Polarion)
  • Work with ECM Team to develop a full set of regression tests for proper ECM software validation, for application to module-level, system-level, and vehicle-level testing
  • Work with Karma’s hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) team to ensure proper integration of ECM requirements within the Karma HIL
  • Be responsible for ECM within Karma’s Software Baseline Release Process
  • Identify, source, and implement necessary test equipment as relates to ECM software and calibration development and validation
  • Execute ECM software validation at system and vehicle level
  • Troubleshoot ECM-related issues within the internal development fleet: root-cause issues, document issues through JIRA, and work with ECM team to develop resolutions within ECM software
  • Follow-up on ECM related issues reported through JIRA and drive issues to resolution
  • Participate in ECM test and development trips as necessary including: creating and executing test plans, analyzing results, and creating reports.
  • Work with Powertrain Systems group to support ECM related testing and development
  • Support vehicle-level test trips for the ECM team as necessary


  • BS. in Engineering (preferably Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Control Systems)
  • Strong background in engine control systems
  • Working knowledge of on board diagnostics (OBD) and diagnostic standards (e.g., UDS)
  • Basic understanding of hybrid electric powertrains
  • Hands-on engineer with good problem solving skills
  • Ability to collaborate and work cross-functionally with calibration and development engineers, Powertrain teams, Electrical Engineering teams, and Vehicle Integration team
  • Ability to innovate, create, and deliver on projects (from concept, through testing and development stage, to implementation)
  • Detail-oriented with good organizational skillsInterest in working in an automotive start-up
  • Experience as an engine controls project calibration engineer
  • Experience working with hybrid electric powertrains
  • Experience creating test cases in Polarion
  • Experience working with ETAS hardware and software including INCA
  • Experience with CANalyzer and Vector suite software/hardware
  • Experience working JIRA
  • Experience working with Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems
  • Experience working in automotive engineering start-up environment
  • Working knowledge of common vehicle communication protocols (e.g., CAN)
  • Experience testing with standard diagnostic tools
