The Engineering Supervisor, Chassis- Brake Systems is responsible for leading the Brake Team, which is comprised of Actuation, Brake Controls, Foundation Brakes, Electric Park Brake, Halfshafts  and brake system-related active safety features. The Supervisor ensures the functional, safety/regulatory compliance and program deliverable objectives of the team are met and acts as a mentor and system expert for team members. The supervisor will manage activities of the Brake Team and evaluate designer workload & capacity, assign & prioritize work, review progress, and evaluate results. The Supervisor reports to the Chassis Engineering Director and will assist in aligning engineering work with program milestones. This position is located in our Irvine, CA facility



Responsibilities

  • Lead Brake Engineering team current and forward model engineering activities   
  • Ensure brake system meets certification requirements for FMVSS (like FMVSS126 and 135 and ECE requirements).
  • Assists in developing engineering processes, procedures, methods, standards, and tool selection;
  • Manage and assist in problem solving activities
  • Supervise activities of direct reports and provide technical mentoring as requested.
  • Assist in developing and tracking Brake Engineering budgets
  • Identify and propose solutions for technical or equipment gaps critical to success  
  • Provide regular status reports and manage creation of documentation to support key decisions
  • Knowledgeable in engineering design processes throughout product life cycle (concept, development, product support, end of life);
  • Perform routine administrative tasks (timecard approval, performance appraisals, etc)
  • Assist in deepening the technical expertise and grow the Brake Team for Driver Assistance and Autonomous Driving technologies.

CURRENT AND PAST PROGRAMS:

  • Manage rapid Brake Engineering response to plant or field service issues as required
  • Support quality investigations; meet quality improvement objectives
  • Monitor customer and internal vehicle test fleets for emerging issues and respond proactively and appropriately
  • Generate cost opportunities
  • Attend and present at regular program status reporting meetings with management and suppliers as needed

FORWARD MODEL PROGRAMS:

  • Lead Brake Team in delivering the forward model brake system to quality, performance, timing, cost, and investment targets
  • Manage design, release and development activities for brake system components. Review and approve DVPRs, DFMEAs, other component and vehicle test plans and test reports
  • Help develop Karma capabilities in Automatic Driver Assistance features as well as assist with evolution from Level 1 to Level 4/5 Autonomous capability
  • Support development / testing plans to ensure compatibility with overall program; lead development of issue response plans
  • Awareness of if not experience with ISO26262 and functional safety analyses of key brake subsystems. Familiarity with ISO9001, ISO/TS16949 as they apply to braking systems.
  • Work with Purchasing and SQE to identify and vet future suppliers
  • Support prototype and production assembly events at supplier and Karma manufacturing locations Add valuable insight & knowledge into Product Safety flow down from system matrix, FMEA development, PFMEA support, and control plan;
  • Design review leadership skills are strongly recommended


Qualifications

  • 10+ years combined experience in Brake System development and component design & release at  recognized OEs or Tier 1 suppliers;
  • BS Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical Preferred) minimum
  • Extensive knowledge of foundation brake, brake actuation and brake control systems at the component design, system architecture or system development level. Experience with basic objective brake system measurement tools, equipment and techniques and data analysis
  • Familiarity with and experience in brake system campaign avoidance and FMVSS certification issues; awareness of ECE, China and other unique export requirements
  • Experience in direct management of engineers preferred; requires good interpersonal skills with teamwork mindset.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex issues to senior management in formal and informal settings; able to handle stressful situations with composure.
  • Candidates with experience with driver assistance and autonomous driving braking features will be highly desirable   
  • Approximately 10-15% Travel required to domestic & international locations
