The Design Release Engineer - HVAC to evaluate/develop supplier parts to ensure product meets design targets. Develop drawings with CAD designers and release through the various program gate reviews.

Functions as the calibration and development lead for the Karma PHEV’s HVAC Control Module. Responsible for directing the activities of the HVAC controls supplier, executing the program calibration and development plan within budget.  Also responsible for assuring HVAC OBDII requirements are met, including documenting test procedures, executing the tests, documenting the results, and recording all information in a requirements management database


  • Manage and develop the HVAC systems controls algorithm specifications and validation plan.
  • Implement and manage software changes with Controller supplier and insures alignment with the vehicle functionality rollout plan.
  • Improve control logic and calibration to improve HVAC performance and system efficiency that will result in improved fuel economy.
  • Assure Controls and System meets HVAC OBDII requirements. Direct Controls supplier to meet OBDII requirements including test cases, documentation and timing.
  • Leads effort to reduce cost and improve the overall quality of vehicle controls systems.
  • Leads problem resolution, tracking processes and provides feedback related status to tracked problems. Use JIRA problem tracking system to communicate status.

  • Should be able to demonstrate a background knowledge or preferably functional competence in following areas:
  • Hybrid electric vehicle thermal systems architectures, components and controls systems.
  • Knowledge of the sensors and actuators
  • Integration of  the vehicle thermal systems plant models and control models for real-time execution in a HIL system.
  • HVAC controller algorithm design and development.
  • Controller system design specifications with focus on HVAC.
  • Manage some commercial aspects (e.g. PRs, tracking invoices, oversee spending curve)
  • Work with OBD group in establishing company standards, procedures, and requirements for the company as relates to OBD testing and test documentation


      Should be able to demonstrate a background knowledge and functional competence in the following areas:

  • Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology
  • HVAC Systems and principles of operation
  • Automotive industry standards such as SAE, ISO
  • Regulatory requirements such as FMVSS, OBDII, etc.

        Software and Controls:

  • Calibration and Data Acquisition Tools, e.g. ETAS INCA, Vector CANalyzer, NeoVi / Vehicle Spy
  • Control algorithm development
  • Matlab Simulink
  • Structured software development process
  • Calibration and release scheduling
  • Diagnostics verification and compliance
  • Software safety standards
  • Fault tree analysis
  • Hazard analysis
  • Software and Controls FMEA

        Interfacing subsystems:

  • CAN Communication standards
  • Vehicle diagnostics
  • Analog and digital circuit interfaces
  • Controller system architectures 

        Character traits and related responsibility:

  • Works with all levels of management, including top management
  • Must display ability to identify problems, recommend solutions, and negotiate and execute contingency plans.
